Artwork in situ #Pentecost

I recently posted about the Pentecost artwork that I’d been working on here.

And I’m pleased to say, that it’s now on display at Syston’s Hub Café on and around the run-up to the season of Pentecost.

But if you’re passing the Hub Café in Syston,
pop in the coffee’s strong and good,
the tea’s multiflavoured,
the hot chocolate is sweet as a nut,
and the cake we’ll if you’re lucky it’s mighty fine!

The Hub Café in Syston is a Syston Methodist Church Community Project.

Also based here is Syston’s Youth Café, which is open of Friday nights –

Youth Cafe Material

A small project that I’ve been involved with is Syston Methodist Church’s Youth Cafe.

I have devised an initial “Syston Youth Cafe” logo and visual identity. I’ve designed and produced some simple fundraising leaflets and complied a basic web presence.

“every little helps”… please? We are not seasoned lycraists.

Can u spare £1 ? “every little helps” as a temple of Mammon doth say.

The Methodist Church in Syston already hosts a vibrant monthly club for younger kids and their parents which is enjoyed by all! A meal, friendship, creativity, sharing…

What they are aiming for is much bigger…

Syston Methodist Church is working, alongside others, for transformed lives & community in Syston.
SMC are looking to turn part of their buildings into a Community Hub, the first goal for the Community Hub is to be used as a Youth Cafe. The need in Syston is huge as there is a complete lack of places for young people in the evenings.  The Community Hub requires a new entrance and the toilets reconfiguring so that the new entrance can lead directly into what is currently a small hall. They have the design and planning permission and are working on building regulations. SMC have some grants and are looking for more. However, they’re still short of quite a few thousand pounds. Every donation will take them closer to the goal of providing a fantastic new resource for our community.

Can you spare a £1? or 2?  If you can, remember to gift aid it if pos’, ‘cos that’s another 25% on top!

OK riding a bike’s not difficult, yes I ride a bit every day, but try and ride further than across town and you’ll realise that it takes a bit of dedication, naivety,  or foolishness.

We are not seasoned lycraists, some may be middle-aged, some are men, but I’m more monkey than ‘mamil’.

We aim to be rolling 165 miles over a three daze at the end of May…

Syston to Church Laneham 61.5 miles.
Church Laneham to Epworth and then back 21 miles each way.
Church Laneham to Syston 61.5 miles.

It’s week… 9 (I think), and the tads have reduced in number greatly, the weaker becoming the food of the stronger.

We have a couple of dozen left and the front legs are now showing.

Syston – “there is a complete lack of places for young people in the evenings”

The act of riding a bike sometimes brings back vivid memories of childhood. Perhaps a bike was part of your earliest times venturing out seemingly alone.

As a teenager, as many others did, I earned my Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, and part of this saw a summer cycling and recording loops around Carn Brea in Cornwall to gain a ‘physical’ element of the award. No GPS, fancy gadgets or even cycle helmets in those days – it was all recorded on paper perhaps with the help of a 1980’s Casio f91.

I was recently again reminded of teenaged years when some kind soul posted a picture of me at that embarrassing age.

We were fortunate in Camborne to have a local youth club attached the local Methodist Church. At this point I have to applaud the patience and dedication of Angela and Bill Herring and Cheryl Wills among others. Also in Lanner our musical offerings and teenaged queries were entertained by members of the local Church; thank you to the Langfords, the Halls, the Pearces and others.

The experiences in and around those youth groups added elements to my worldview at the time. Biology and chemistry aside, the ideas and ‘stuff’ experienced in my teenaged years have challenged, informed and been a comfort in later years. OK it was only part of the rich experiment that is growing up, but there’s wisdom in SOME of them-there old truths.
I have to say the human ‘being there’, the kindness and the giving is one of the enduring memories!

Which brings me to what’s there for the current young people on our community.

In syston, it’s been reported that there is a complete lack of places for young people in the evenings”.

Syston Methodist Church is working, alongside others, for transformed lives & community in Syston. If you’ve ever valued any element of support from a group such as the above I wonder could you spare £1 or 2? I’m not as young as I was and 160+ miles is a long way to pedal a bike!

I’m hoping all of the past members of Camborne Wesley MAYC and Lanner ‘New Life’ might look back in fondness and send me a £1 – right guys?

Happy daze!

Even if you have no spiritual life/faith, Christian ideas have always given practical advice about how to handle failure, dejection and loss… etc.
It may be no accident that the huge increase in the incidence of common mental health issues seems to coincide with the decline of religion in the West and the loss of a whole tradition experienced in dealing with, if not answering, life’s unanswerable questions. There might be extreme misdirection but there might be also valuable insights offered by Christian teaching if you can fend off the theological language and hoopla in which it’s dressed.

Bit of this and that…

Satuarday morning round the block, 25 miles.

Over the last year I have slowly increased my 10mile spin to 25miles.

I don’t get much time to get out, what with little ladies to entertain, but when I get an hour or two this is the ’round’ I enjoy:

Look local first!

After unsuccessfully visiting two larger city cycle shops this morning, I popped into the ‘small on the outside, big on the inside’ local town shop. I was after a quality chargeable front light for my bike – for commuting daily using unlit country lanes.
It’s fine immersing yourself in the supposedly ‘this is what you need, ‘cos this is want everyone else has’ on the interweb, but perhaps ‘real’ life is more… real, amenable, alive…?

  • The first large Half-auto store I passed; which adversities “For everything to do with bikes…”; didn’t have ANY rechargeable lights and what it had was relatively basic and arguably not suitable.
  • The second shop (an old standard of Nottingham origins) was helpful and informative and although they could order some (can’t we call) didn’t stock ANY rechargeable lights, and again what it had was relatively basic and arguably not suitable.
  • Embarrassingly, my last choice, because I was passing on the way home, (and to be honest I thought it was a big ask for a small shop to stock a large range of accessories) to my surprise had just the thing!

They were welcoming, knowledgable and helpful.
The Serfas ‘True 250’ is just what I was looking for.

The spec and the price was just right – and having compared it’s credentials further I’m very pleased with it. It was a great to be able to see and try a range of options before I bought.

Thanks Cyclops, I had little faith but next time ‘Cyclops Cycles’
Cyclopscycles.co.uk in Syston will be my first choice.
